State parliament is considering the future of poker machines in Tasmania right now, so it's time to act. Our goals are simple:

  • Get poker machines out of community venues like pubs and clubs.
  • Make sure that poker machines that remain in casinos are properly regulated to be safe and fair.

We have a unique opportunity to stop a new licence being issued for poker machines in pubs and clubs,  which means we can get them out of our community.

Anyone can make a submission to a parliamentary committee. You don't need to be an expert  - you have a right to express your opinion to your elected representatives. Here are some points to get you going.

The Committee explicitly wants to know what Tasmanians think about the location, number and type of poker machines now, and what we want in the future. This means they want to hear from you!

In your own words tell the Committee what you think of poker machines:-

  • Do you have personal experience for yourself, in your family or in your community relating to gambling on poker machines?
  • Do you want poker machines in your suburb or town?
  • Do you think there are too many poker machines in your community?
  • Should poker machines be confined to the casinos?
  • Would you rather go to a local pub or club without poker machines?
  • Is it ok with you if private business and the government makes money off machines that are deliberately designed to addict people and cause a great deal of suffering?

Some facts you might want to use:

Four out of five Tasmanians want poker machines either totally removed from pubs and clubs or reduced in numbers.

Tasmanians lose more than $200 million on poker machines  every year, which is money not spent in local businesses.

Small businesses in areas with lots of poker machines have reported a downturn in business since pokies were introduced.

Poker machine addiction causes  mental and physical health problems, relationship and family breakdown, loss of jobs, crimes, homelessness and poverty.
